Budapest’s most famous “ruin bar” is a must stop on any trip to Budapest. It’s the original “ruin bar,” something that Budapest nightlife has come to be synonymous with. The story is pretty simple. In the early 2000s, a few young guys from Hungary set up a bar in this abandoned building in the Jewish Quarter. The bar, Szimpla Kert was such a massive success that it kicked off the entire Ruin Bar craze. Today Budapest is littered with ‘ruin bars’ that occupy formally abandoned buildings throughout the town.
For drinks with a view, look no further than Bar 360. To get here, simply take the elevator next to the art deco shopping centre on Andrássy Avenue and go straight up to the roof. Here you can check out unmatched views of all of Budapest below while enjoying some great drinks. Even in winter when rooftop bars tend to lose their luster, you can still head to Bar 360 and enjoy their heated igloos.
An interesting, off the beaten path bar, where you are allowed to leave your mark…literally. The walls, floors, tables, etc are covered in stapled pieces of paper, business cards and advertisements of people leaving their marks. The floor is also covered in straw and patrons are encouraged to enjoy free peanuts and throw the shells on the floor when they’re done.
If beer is your drink of choice, then the best place for you to go is Élesztő which translates to ‘yeast,’ in English. The bar features 25 local microbrews in another ruin bar set in an old glass factory.
This special bar is the combination of two independent ruin bars, Instant and Fogas that moved in together a long time ago. Today this is a massive complex with multiple bars and clubs. This is a massive party spot and not necessarily for those looking for a quiet night out.
