Danang

To be perfectly honest, we did not spend a ton of time in Danang.  We basically got to spend an afternoon there before moving on to Hoi An.  If there’s one major city in Vietnam that you can miss without “missing” too much Danang would be it.  Danang is a major city and there is certainly plenty to see and do there, but of all the places we researched it was the one we felt most comfortable short changing on our trip.  During the couple hours we spent in the city, we weren’t overly disappointed in our decision.  The city gives off a really strong communist dictatorship vibe.  It’s a political center for the party and the propaganda is in your face.  Whereas Saigon is a free wheeling, fun town completely devoid of any propaganda that seems to embrace open and free culture, and doesn’t feel the least bit different than your typical European or American city, Danang had a stifling political look to it.  The experience wasn’t different at all, but it’s almost impossible to describe how the city center just had a somewhat dystopian militaristic feel to the way it looked.

At any rate, here’s a list of the some of the highlights of the region to check out, just know that there’s probably some better blogs out there for more hands on recommendations:

1 – Visit the Ba Na Hills:  Incredible vistas that overlook the sea and a cable car to the top if you’re feeling lazy

2 – Check out the show on Danang’s Dragon Bridge: Every Saturday and Sunday at 9pm The Dragon Bridge (which is the longest such bridge of its kind) lights up and puts on a show

3 – Travel to My Son Sancuary: This UNESCO World Heritage site is a really cool ruined sanctuary

4 – The Golden Bridge: Pictured above this bridge is a great spot to snap some instagramable photos as it looks like two hands coming out of the cliff side are holding the bridge up

5 – Get a Vietnamese Coffee at Cong Caphe: Communist themed coffee bar on the water with great views.

6 – Check out some of Vietnams better beaches: My Khe Beach, Non Nuoc Beach, and Pham Van Dong Beach

7 – Visit some of Vietnams most famous pagodas: Linh Ung Pagoda, Phap Lam Pagoda, Danang Cathedral
