The most important thing you need to know about Fredericksburg’s wineries is that you can’t just get in the car and go on a whim. Any of the wineries worth going to you’ll need to make a reservation for the tasting in advance. Texas wines are not all that great in general. There are a handful of excellent vineyards in Fredericksburg that are well worth your time, but there’s also a lot of people making blueberry wine with 6% residual sugars. Below is a short list of the wineries that you should absolutely make an effort to see if you go out to Fredericksburg. After that we’ll show you the photos from our Texas Winos Tour, which is a full day bus trip from Austin. And, we’ll end with recommendations for dinner if you decide to stay overnight in the lovely quaint German town of Fredericksburg.
Best Wineries in Fredericksburg
1) Kuhlman Cellars – Fantastic wines and a phenomenal food pairing. Make sure to get a jar of their incredible rosemary, olive oil, salt and pepper seasoned almonds before you leave. Whenever you go to Fredericksburg, build your day of tastings around Kuhlman’s fabulous wine and food pairing.
2) William Chris Vineyards – After Kuhlman Cellars, head to William Chris for a tasting and a tour of the vineyard. This privately owned and operated winery is the brain child of long time friends and wine making partners Bill and Chris. These guys are extremely passionate about what they do and it comes through in their wines.
Grape Creek Vineyards – The biggest and most commercial of the Fredericksburg Wineries, Grape Creek doesn’t disappoint with a wonderful array of very good wines. This vineyard is by far the prettiest of the vineyards in the area. They have a really great wine club deal for local residents where you can get free tastings every single day at either their main vineyard in Fredericksburg or their satellite tasting room in Georgetown. The also have a fantastic brick oven pizza restaurant on the premises with some of the best pizza you’ll find anywhere in Texas.
