Antiparos is a small island off the west coast of Paros with rustic beaches, crystal clear waters, a beautiful and authentic looking greek village featuring whitewashed walls, doors with peeling blue paint outlined by bright pink Bougainvillea trees and most importantly it is lacking in the amount of tourists you can expect compared to some of the other islands in the Cyclades. With easy access via a 5-10 min ferry ride from Paros it is the perfect spot for a day trip to relax on some beautiful Greek beaches.
This tiny heaven and current home of actor Tom Hanks is a must stop on your trip through the Cyclades as it is surrounded by white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters. If you are planning a beach day during your Greek vacation this would be a great day to relax on the beaches. But, it’s the charming off the beaten path and relaxed atmosphere that really pulls you in. Some of the best beaches on the island include Psaraliki, Glifa, Livadia and Agios Giorgos.
When you get into the port after taking the ferry from Pounta walk through the small town right there and head inward to the Venetian Castle at its center. Antiparos, like many Aegean islands, historically attracted the unwanted attention of Pirates. Building these walled structures like Antiparos’ Kastro provided the inhabitants some level of protection.
When it’s time for lunch stay in the nearby harbor town of Agios Giorgos which is lined with seaside tavernas serving up some of the coldest beers and most delicious seafood you’ll ever have.
Our favorite stop was Sapou Restaurant. On a hot summer day approaching 90 degrees their large pints of Mythos Beer on tap, so cold that ice forms across the surface was exactly what we needed.
After lunch make sure to head to Vicky’s Ice Cream for an after lunch treat
Other fun and interesting things to consider on the Island of Antiparos:
– Antiparos Caves which are thought to be the largest stalactite and stalagmite formations in Europe
– Camping Antiparos: A fun experience for those that love the outdoors, where you can camp out on the beach in front of beautiful, seemingly untouched turquoise waters
– There are plenty of tour companies that book fun boat trips that take you around to all the beaches and cool rock formations around the coast of Antiparos.
