FCK: Football Club Kaiserslautern
Kaiserslautern’s beloved fútbol team has a rockin’ stadium during home matches. Make sure you make it to a match before your time in Germany is up.
The German Wine Road
The area surrounding Landstuhl is known for being one of Germany’s best wine regions. The wine road has dozens of wine-producing towns that you can stop at and enjoy some wine tastings. Culture Trip has a great write up of some of the main attractions that exist along the route. Every January the town of Freinsheim puts on a torch walk festival through the vineyards where dozens of stands are set up to taste wine from local producers. Visit a castle
Has an excellent biergarten overlooking Landstuhl
Has one of the best restaurants in the area in an absolutely stunning setting. And, they frequently have festivals and fairs that take place in their incredibly well preserved castle.
Gartenschau
Perfect for a day trip with young kids. The park is full of life sized dinosaur replicas and has a mini golf course as well.
Japanischer Garten
One of the Largest Japanese gardens in Europe, the Japanischer Garten is the perfect, tranquil place to relax. The park puts on Japanese festivals like Tanabata and Hanami as well as tea ceremonies and other Japanese themed events.
Kaiserslautern Farmer’s Market
Every Saturday and Tuesday farmers from around the area come and sell their produce, meat, cheese, and other gourmet food items in the center square in Kaiserslautern.
Best Restaurants in the Area
Asian
Alom Dee
One of the best Thai restaurants anywhere. Make sure to start your meal with a #1 as an appetizer. It’s quite literally the most perfect appetizer ever created. Everything here is excellent, fresh and full of flavor.
Saigon
The best place in town for a sit down Vietnamese meal. The food is second to none.
Lila’s Süd Vietnamese
The best place for take out Vietnamese. While Saigon does better plated meals and is a nicer venue to actually go have a meal at, Lila’s makes a superior Vietnamese Pancake as well as an excellent Banh Mi.
Mr Lian’s
With a couple of locations in the area Mr Lian’s is the premier spot in the area for higher end sushi and Japanese food.
German
Burg Lichtenberg
Fresh, home cooked meals in a castle. Often the meats on the menu will be something that the owner hunted earlier that week. The food is always phenomenal and the setting is unmatched in the area.
Burgschänke Hotel Restaurant
Few places in the are offer a more authentically German experience than Burgschänke Hotel. With ample seating both indoor and out, this is the perfect place to stop on a summer day to grab a Hefeweizen and a schnitzel.
Gaststätte Spinnrädl
Built in the oldest building in Kaiserslautern, this restaurant has been serving food since the 16th-century. Besides the historic venue their food is top notch German fare.
Pfeffermühle
The best flamkuchen (thin German pizza) in the area. They also make the best escargot we’ve ever had.
Italian
Endlich
This Italian restaurant is a hidden gem. The husband and wife duo makes some of the most delicious pasta and pizza dishes you’ll find anywhere outside of Italy. And, they prepare some of the best steaks as well.
Taormina
High end Italian dishes with one of the most astounding burrata balls imported directly from Sicily. Located right in the center of Landstuhl, this restaurant is a must stop if you love Italian food.
Trulli
Perfect Italian restaurant with really nice atmosphere, particularly in the summer when you can sit outside on their vine covered terrace. They make excellent pasta and pizzas.
Pizzaria Trattoria da Salvatore
Salvatore makes some of the best pizza in the area. They have a fantastic restaurant with outdoor seating and a play ground for kids. The prices are extremely reasonable.
Greek
Berg Athos
The best Greek restaurant in the area and really the only higher end Greek restaurant in the area. Perfect for date night if you’re in the mood for Greek food.
Akropolis
A close second to Mythos.
Metaxa
Excellent Greek food. Be prepared to take shots of ouzo as the owner takes a shot with every single one of his customers and doesn’t really take no for an answer.
Mythos von Delphi
A hidden gem, family owned, Greek restaurant with some of the best stuffed mushrooms you’ll ever try.
Mexican
Cantina Mexicana
The best Mexican food you’ll find in a place like Germany. It’s not something that’s going to blow your socks off if you’ve lived in places that have great Mexican, but still pretty darn good and they have an actual Mexican chef which is a rarity in Germany.
Fiesta Mexicana
A close second to Cantina. Very similar in the quality of Mexican food.
Turkish
Efendi Kebab
One of the best döner kebab restaurants in town. Their best dish though by far is the Iskander, which is a layer of bread crumbs covered in döner meat, tomato sauce and Turkish creme fresh yogurt that is absolutely incredible.
Indian
Royal Aroma
The only Indian place in the area that’s even remotely worth going to. It won’t be the best Indian food you ever ate, but it is of perfectly decent enough standards that even your Indian friends with high standards will enjoy it.
African
Safari
Many consider Safari to be the best restaurant in the area, period. This family-owned and operated Ethiopian restaurant in downtown Kaiserslautern serves up the best Ethiopian cuisine in town. If you’re up for an adventure and like cooking, there is a small store right down the street from Safari called Greenland Afro & Asia Shop that sells most of the ingredients and spices you’d need to create your own Ethiopian dishes at home.
Other
Uwe’s Tomate
Classy, upscale European-based menu with modern and inventive dishes. It’s not the cheapest place in town, but the food is always stellar.
Oskar Restaurant
High-end, modern tasting menu with interesting takes on standard dishes. Perfect for a special occasion.
PUUR
This fancy wine bar and restaurant has one of the most inventive menus in town. They specialize in small tapas style dishes and wine pairings.
La Bodega
Tapas style menu in the heart of old town Landstuhl where you can get a great South American wine to pair with Spanish and South American-style tapas dishes.
