Kronberg

Kronberg is a lovely little town right outside Frankfurt, that is surrounded by incredible Schlosshotels (old castles and palaces that you can stay in).  The nicest Schlosshotel in the area is Schlosshotel Kronberg.  Built under commission from Empress Victoria Friedrich and completed in 1893, Schloss Friedrichshof is today one of the most impressive German castles and offers an unparalleled place to stay around Frankfurt.  If you’re looking for a great, romantic, weekend getaway in a luxurious castle hotel, look no further that Schlosshotel Kronberg.

The hotel is also built along a gorgeous 18-hole golf course.  As a bit of an oddity in Germany, and especially in a castle, all rooms have air conditioning.

The grounds of the hotel are simply stunning.  Complete with rose gardens and hedgerows, there is plenty to see around the hotel.

They also have a fantastic biergarten that offers plenty of outdoor seating in a beautiful garden, some great local wine selections, beer and a number of grilled food options.

The hotel also has an incredible array of horses and offers horseback riding as well.

The interior of the hotel is as luxurious as you’d expect from a castle and offers plenty of great rooms to explore, a restaurant, a bar, a library and a great wine cellar.

Best of all they are very welcoming to dogs.

The hotel has a couple of luxury automobiles that are available at all times to have a driver take you into town or to another one of their sister hotels or restaurants.  Just a few minutes drive outside of the castle walls is the delightful little town of Kronberg, where you can find ample places to sit outside and drink wine and beer and a handful of wonderful family owned restaurants where you can get an authentic homemade meal.  Right in the courtyard of Kronberg Academy, the music school in town, there is a fantastic biergarten where you can grab a drink and listen to the sounds of violins and cellos practicing classical music.  Right next door is a place called Recepturkeller Kronberg, a small cave-like bar with live music as well as great beer and wine.

The best restaurant by far is Gasthaus zum Feldberg.  This small family owned restaurant with an adorable outside seating area in the backyard specializes in the owner and chef’s native Latvian cuisine with a huge helping of German influences.  Their Russian noodle dumplings are out of this world.

Right outside of Kronberg is another small lovely town with a couple of interesting Schlosshotels and some fantastic restaurants.  The city of Falkenstein has a small castle ruins to explore that offers excellent views of Frankfurt as well as Villa de Rothschild a castle hotel previously owned by the Rothschild family (now a member of the Marriott family of Autograph Hotels) and it’s sister hotel The Falkenstein Grand which has a fantastic restaurant with outdoor seating overlooking a great courtyard with Frankfurt on the horizon.
